MEET THE STAFF
Dr. Jordan Axe
As a child, Dr. Axe constantly suffered with ear infections, sinus infections, low energy, and chronic skin conditions.
He found out on a firsthand basis that being sick drastically lowers your quality of life!
At this early point in his life, Dr. Axe knew very little about the different treatment options available for his conditions; however, like most Americans, he thought the only means of treatment was the traditional medical system. Following the “standard of care,” Dr. Axe was sent to medical specialist after medical specialist with no true answers to his issues. At the age of 14, he started taking antibiotics for his sinus infections and additional medication for his severe acne. Several months after beginning this regimen, Dr. Axe’s body grew accustomed to those medications, and he was forced to begin taking even stronger meds. Dr. Axe was then diagnosed with eczema and a hypothyroid condition known as Hashimotos Thyroiditis. As you guys can see, this route of management simply was not working!
The path he was taking of more doctors’ visits and more medications was only making him sicker. Dr. Axe knew he had to figure out another course of action. Through several years of research and drastic lifestyle changes, Dr. Axe is proud to announce that today he is the healthiest he has ever been! He is free of all of his skin conditions, Hashimotos, chronic fatigue, and frequent digestive problems.
It was his own life experience and finally getting to the root of his issues that led Dr. Axe down the path of becoming a functional medicine practitioner. With the memories of the many years of frustration and agony due to his own conditions, Dr. Axe is driven on a daily basis to restore hope to his patients and help them get to the root cause of their issues!
Dr. Jason Schultz
Dr. Schultz earned his Doctorate of Allopathic Medicine from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Loma Linda, California, and completed his Emergency Medicine Residency at St. Luke’s Hospital and Health Network in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He is Board-Certified in Emergency Medicine. He has lived and worked in the greater Orlando area since 2006.
Janel Mayer, ARNP
Janel, our nurse practitioner was a great addition to our office. Her passion for improving overall health and vitality is evident in the meticulous care she provides to her patients. She obtained her registered nursing degree from Penn State in 2004, and worked as a nurse in the hospital setting for 10 years before pursuing her advanced practice degree in 2014 from Chamberlain College of Nursing. During that time she gained valuable knowledge and experience in health care at some of the best facilities on the east coast. She traveled between Pennsylvania and Florida, caring for patients who presented to the hospital already sick and requiring constant monitoring in ICU. She has always loved nursing and helping people get well, but decided reaching them before they required hospital admission was a more effective way to care for them. Treating patients on an individual basis, reducing their pain and regenerating their bodies naturally has been her focus since graduating and influenced her decision to join the Root Cause Medical Clinic. Remaining up to date with the most current and effective treatment options through continuing education courses allows her to provide unparalleled care to her patients.

Dr. Lewis has more than six years of post-doctoral education in functional medicine and over a decade of experience in clinical nutrition. Through his previous practice in Plainview, NY, Dr. Lewis helped thousands of people by identifying underlying causes of low thyroid, fatigue, weight loss resistance, and other chronic health issues. Dr. Lewis employs a variety of medical diagnostic testing and clinical approaches, including nutrition analysis, dietary modifications, and natural supplement therapies that help people with chronic conditions. He is licensed to practice in both New York and Florida.
Dr. Lewis supports people with chronic inflammation, where the current health care system often fails to find adequate solutions. Unlike many physicians in the current health care system who may rush patients through the door, Dr. Lewis spends time with his patients to thoroughly understand their conditions and find out what they have tried before seeing him. During their initial visit, he explores the patient’s medical history, family history, medications, supplements, life stresses, and other factors to develop a fuller understanding of the patient and his or her condition and begin to diagnose the root causes of their illness. He then works closely with the patient to develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses their most pressing symptoms in the short-term while ensuring a healthy long-term outcome.
Dr. Lewis’ education and training demonstrate both his knowledge and his commitment to patient health. He earned his B.S. in Biology from Shenandoah University, his Doctorate in Chiropractic from Life University, his Diplomate status in Clinical Nutrition from the American Clinical Board of Nutrition, his CFMP® from Functional Medicine University, and his certification as a Digestive Health Specialist (DHS) through the Food Enzyme Institute. Through his post-graduate studies, Dr. Lewis has advanced knowledge and training in Mastering Blood Chemistry, Mastering the Thyroid, Neurotransmitters and Brain Health, Leaky Gut and Gluten Sensitivity, Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), Mold Toxicity, Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome, Sick Building Syndrome, and Lyme Disease.
In addition to attending to his patients’ needs, Dr. Lewis is an accomplished contributor to the medical community and a tireless advocate for whole health. He teaches weight loss resistance and functional medicine to wellness providers and personal trainers at the Academy of Applied Personal Training Education. For two consecutive years, he was awarded Best Holistic Practitioner on Long Island by the Long Island Pulse, and he has served as a featured expert on Long Island News 12 for reports related to Thyroid Health, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, Gluten Sensitivity, Diabetes, Weight Loss, Nutrition and Lifestyle, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and more. An accomplished speaker, Dr. Lewis has delivered over one hundred health presentations to corporations, local organizations, schools, hospitals, and support groups covering a wide range of medical and nutritional topics — work which earned him an Action Long Island Motivational Speaker award and the opportunity to serve as the keynote speaker at Multiple Sclerosis Long Island’s Wellness Symposium.
Dr. Lewis’ passion for health and wellness stems from his own personal experience. With a family history of autoimmune conditions and diabetes, and his own lab tests showing his genetic susceptibility for developing Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (autoimmune thyroid), he has had to learn about managing his own health to help prevent the onset of these illnesses. Over time, Dr. Lewis has successfully adjusted his lifestyle to optimize his energy and enjoy optimal health. Through the process of improving his own health, he acquired a deeper understanding of health and wellness, which he now offers his patients. What he enjoys most is working with patients who are seeking better outcomes than what conventional medicine has provided them, especially as it relates to hypothyroid, chronic digestive complaints, diabetes, pain, and chronic fatigue. When he’s not working, Dr. Lewis loves spending time with his wife and two girls, hiking, biking, and playing sports.

Licensed Mental Health Counselor
I am a bilingual (Spanish) Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and have been working in the field since I graduated with my B.A. in Psychology in 1996. I received my M.A. in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling, and a certificate in Marriage & Family Therapy, from the USF in 2004. I am a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, a Master ART (Accelerated Resolution Therapy) Practitioner, a Basic ART Facilitator, and a State qualified supervisor for registered mental health counselors and marriage and family therapists working towards licensure.
I use Accelerated Resolution Therapy, combined with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, to help individuals improve the overall quality of their life and obtain further resources and tools for self-care. I have participated in different USF research studies of ART to treat veterans with symptoms of PTS. ART “is a form of psychotherapy with roots in existing evidence-based therapies but shown to achieve benefits much more rapidly (usually within 1-5 sessions). Clients with depression, anxiety, panic attacks, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance abuse, sexual abuse and many other mental and physical conditions can experience remarkable benefits starting in the first session. The client is always in control of the entire ART session, with the therapist guiding the process. Although some traumatic experiences such as rape, combat experiences, or loss of a loved one can be very painful to think about or visualize, the therapy rapidly moves clients beyond the place where they are stuck in these experiences toward growth and positive changes. The process is very straightforward, using relaxing eye movements and a technique called Voluntary Memory/Image Replacement to change the way in which the negative images are stored in the brain. The treatment is grounded in well-established psychotherapy techniques, and the end result is that traumas and difficult life experiences will no longer trigger strong emotions or physical reactions. Importantly, clients do not even have talk about their traumas or difficult life experiences with the therapist to achieve recovery.” Acceleratedresolutiontherapy.com.
